Water Farofa

Water Farofa

Oh, my dears! Today, Grandma is going to teach you the simplest and most delicious way to make Water Farofa – a recipe that feels like a hug from the countryside! It’s the fluffiest farofa there is, perfect with any meal.

This farofa is the soul of Northeastern Brazilian cooking, my sweethearts! It’s humble, but it fills your heart with joy. It’s perfect with some warm beans, a stewed meat, or even by itself for breakfast. Shall we learn?

Grandma’s Ingredients – Water Farofa

  • 2 cups of cassava flour (manioc flour)
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 3 tablespoons of melted “manteiga da terra” (or regular butter)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 generous handful of fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Salt to taste (start with 1 teaspoon)

How to Make It, With Love

  1. Let’s start with the base: In a deep bowl, pour in the warm water and the melted butter.
  2. Time for the seasonings: Add the chopped onion, cilantro, and salt. Mix well so the salt dissolves.
  3. The secret to fluffy farofa: Now, we’ll add the cassava flour little by little, stirring with a wooden spoon.
  4. Don’t be alarmed: It’s normal for the farofa to have some little lumps! That’s what gives it its charm.
  5. The finishing touch: Keep stirring until all the ingredients are well incorporated. If it needs more salt, just adjust it.
  6. It’s ready! Serve it with all your love.

Grandma’s Serving Tip

Let it rest for 5 little minutes before serving so the flour absorbs all the flavor. It’s wonderful with some good beans or a fried egg!

My dear, this recipe was made for a small, cozy portion, perfect for when you’re cooking for one or two. If you want to serve this for more people at a family gathering, I recommend doubling or even tripling the amounts. Just remember to use a bigger bowl so you have plenty of room to mix it all with love
